Examples of Web 2.0

In my web browsing I've found some examples of sites that to me truly represent the idea of Web 2.0 and show how user participation is the key feature of Web 2.0.

Facebook
People have always needed to communicate but as technology changes so has the preferred ways to communicate. This site allows people to share their details online, publish photos and send messages to each other online. This just shows how the surge in user participation has been key to the rise of Web 2.0. Even though I personally am not a fan, the amazing number of people that have signed up to this website is phenomenal. I read just the other day that it was now the most visited site on the web. Wow, to be the guy that invented Facebook.

YouTube
This is another sensation that has really dug into people's desires- whether it be serious or funny, people love posting their own videos. It's sort of like Australia's Funniest Home Videos available 24/7. But seriously, it has meant that users are able to display what they want on the web and has opened up a fantastic way for the user to receive information. This two-way process is one of the most important aspects of Web 2.0.

Wikipedia
This search engine has really changed the way people get their information. It is a common practice of mine to go to Wikipedia first just to get an idea of what something is about. It allows people to publish what they know on any topic and in almost any language. Though it may not always be reliable in terms of the information that is published, it has brought together a great mass of information into a web encyclopedia.
